Guglielmo Vicario has been speaking about his bond with Micky van de Ven and the belief that Ange Postecoglou is building something at Tottenham.

Vicario has made a big impact as Spurs’ first new main goalkeeper in 11 years, succeeding the World Cup-winning Hugo Lloris who has since left for MLS side Los Angeles FC. Tottenham’s 27-year-old Italian stopper has caught the eye with his performances and off the pitch he has struck up a close friendship with 22-year-old Van de Ven, who mops up plenty in front of him on the turf.

“I have a good feeling with Micky. He is a good lad and a very good guy for me. I try to speak to him and we try to help each other inside and outside the pitch,” Vicario said in a club interview, in which he also called the Dutchman the funniest person in the squad along with Yves Bissouma.

“We try to spend a lot of time together, with Manor Solomon, with Destiny [Udogie], Cuti [Romero], with Rodrigo [Bentancur], with everyone, so I think we are a big group with very good feelings. This season is like a starting point for building something. When we train, when we stay together, it’s very good, it’s very passionate and we have to keep going with that.”

Vicario, who is currently on international duty with Italy, believes that this current group of Tottenham players has a bright future under Postecoglou if they can remain together as a unit.

“We are very young. We hope to stay together for a long time because we have this quality, this togetherness, this desire to stay together and do something special. I can feel this now and during the years it will only get better and better,” he said. “I don’t know how much time we have to do something special but we have to stay in and hopefully be on the walls of that stadium forever, for eternity. That would be one of my best dreams.”

Much has been made of Postecoglou’s phone calls to new signings to convince them to join Tottenham and his conversation with Vicario was another key one as the stopper had little doubt in swapping Empoli for the Premier League and north London.

“Ange called me and it was a very good call, because he knew everything about me, about my past and my style of play and about my character, because he said a very important and proud thing for me, that ‘both of us, we started from the bottom and we went over all of the hurdles in our life and career’,” he remembered.

“You have to show your qualities and for me in that time it was so much more important to hear about the man. I had no doubt about joining him, joining Spurs because I think we can do brilliant work together.”
