Live: Woman, 50, dies in Hackney lorry crash as Cambridge Heath road closed and cordon in place

A serious accident has shut a major road in East London this afternoon (Thursday, May 23). Cambridge Heath Road is shut in both directions with several buses diverted after a woman in her 50s has died following the crash.

The reportedly serious accident happened between Hackney Road and Victoria Park Road, and has been closed off since 10.45am this morning.

“Police were called at 10.44am on Thursday, May 23 to reports of a collision at Cambridge Heath Road, E2. Officers and London Ambulance Service [LAS] attended. At the scene a woman, aged 50, had been in collision with a lorry. Sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.56am

Enquiries are underway to notify next of kin. The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene. There have been no arrests. Closures and cordons remain in place.

“Anyone who witnessed this incident or has footage should call police on 101 or post on X @MetCC quoting 2377/23MAY.”

There is queuing traffic to Bethnal Green Station, and along Hackney Road from Hoxton, with traffic building up southbound back along Victoria Park Road.

Hackney Road is also closed both ways under the railway bridge, with the whole Cambridge Heath crossroads taped-off, reports traffic and travel monitoring website Inrix.

Diversions are in place for the for number 26, 55, 106, 254, 388 and D6 buses.
