Pedro Porro will not represent Spain at Euro 2024 this summer despite excelling in Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham team during the 2023/24 season. Playing 90 minutes for his country in a friendly against Colombia in late March, the 24-year-old appeared to be in a good position to earn a call-up for the upcoming European Championships in Germany.

Strengthening his case even further with a strong end to the season for Tottenham and contributing with two goals in his final three appearances for the Lilywhites, Porro was unfortunately not one of the 29 names selected by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente as he named a provisional squad on Monday morning. Instead, Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal and Jesus Navas of Sevilla have been selected as Spain’s right-backs for the tournament.

The inclusion of Navas, who is now 38 years of age, over Porro has been a big talking point for many Tottenham fans since news of De la Fuente’s squad broke. The Tottenham right-back will now have the summer off and return for pre-season training at the start of July.

Following his surprise omission, Porro opened up on his Spain snub and also showed his class in a message on his Instagram account. He wrote: “I was very excited about the possibility of being able to represent my country in the Euros, but in the end it won’t be possible this year.

“Respect and admiration for all of the players who will be defending our colours. From here I will be supporting the team hoping we have great joy. Come on guys.”

Following his Instagram post, Tottenham captain Son Heung-min showed his support for his teammate with a message in his comments that read “you are the best”. Son’s message also contained a red heart and a crying face emoji.

Cristian Romero also made his feelings clear in the comments section as he wrote “come on bro, incredible” and left a hand over face emoji, with fellow defender Micky van de Ven also going on to post the same emoji. Porro did receive some support from a couple of members of the Spain squad as Carvajal and Alex Grimaldo both posted red heart emojis.

Following the conclusion of Euro 2024 midway through July, Spain return to action in September with Nations League fixtures against Serbia and Switzerland on the agenda. Porro will be intent on forcing his way into De La Fuente’s plans in the 2024/25 season and doing everything possible to ensure he makes La Roja’s squad for the 2026 World Cup finals.

Porro finished the 2023/24 campaign by making 37 appearances in all competitions for the Lilywhites, registering four goals and seven assists in the process. The Don-Benito born star will now be one of 29 players who will take part in the early weeks of Tottenham’s pre-season as Postecoglou gets his plans in place for the upcoming campaign.
