Chelsea are reportedly one of six Premier League clubs facing the prospect of having to sell players before the end of June to comply with profit and sustainability rules.
The Blues, who have spent over £1billion on players since the takeover of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital from Roman Abramovich in May 2022, are preparing for their second straight season without Champions League football. That, alongside zero income from Europe during the 2022/23 campaign, has put the Blues under pressure.
Although Chelsea remain adamant that they do need to sell players this summer, Sky Sports report that the Blues, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester face having to sell players before the end of the month to not fall foul of Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

It was reported back in April that Boehly is confident Chelsea will not breach profit and sustainability regulations despite their accounts showing losses of £89.1million ($111m) for the financial year ending in June 2023. The Premier League rules state that a club can lose no more than £105m over a three-year period, with Everton and Nottingham Forest having faced points deductions for exceeding that limit.
Chelsea’s losses for the previous campaign amounted to £121.4m, and in the 2019/20 campaign, they made a profit of £36m but that sum will not be included in the next set of PSR calculations in December.
“The club continues to balance success on the field together with the financial imperatives of complying with UEFA and Premier League financial regulations,” Boehly said in April. “The club has complied with these since their inception in 2012 and expects to do so in the foreseeable future.”
The sale of Mason Mount to Manchester United is set to go through under this set of PSR calculations, as that transfer did not occur until early July 2023. Meanwhile, the arrivals of Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Cole Palmer and Axel Disasi also count for this financial year.
Lewis Hall is set to join Newcastle on a permanent transfer as part of the £35m obligation in his loan deal, while Ian Maatsen and Conor Gallagher are among the players on the chopping block. Both Maatsen and Gallagher would represent pure profit having progressed through the club’s academy.
