Here we take a look at what is Ange Postecoglou’s strongest Tottenham team as things stand following Son Heung-min, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma’s departures to play international football

Ange Postecoglou really does have limited players to work with at present as Tottenham plot a big start to the new year. Fresh from ending 2023 with a 3-1 win over in-form Bournemouth, Spurs return to action on Friday evening with an FA Cup third round clash at home to Burnley.

A trip to Manchester United then follows nine days later, with a possible FA Cup fourth round tie on the agenda in the days leading up to facing Brentford at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday, January 31. Tottenham’s schedule may not be as busy as it was in December but it is very much going to be a tricky period to navigate due to absent players.

Already without first-team stars such as Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison through injury, Spurs will now be missing Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and Son Heung-min due to their international commitments over the next month. Bissouma and Sarr are representing Mali and Senegal respectively at the Africa Cup of Nations, with Son on Asian Cup duty for South Korea.

As both tournaments come to a conclusion the second weekend in February, there is the real prospect of Tottenham missing their key players for six games providing that they do go all the way and reach the final. It’s not an ideal scenario at all for Postecoglou but it is one Tottenham do have to try and get through as best they possibly can.

Injury returns for Romero, Van de Ven and Maddison in the not too distant future will certainly boost them in the weeks ahead, as will the potential arrival of January signings now the transfer window is open for business. But what exactly is Postecoglou’s strongest Tottenham team at present now that Son, Sarr and Bissouma are heading off to play international football? takes a look below.
