Summer thoughts

Former Gunner Lee Dixon, who celebrated his 60th birthday yesterday, has had his say on Arsenal’s sumemr transfer window plans.

Speaking to BetVictor he believes the Gunners will need to sign a new striker this summer, despite their recent flurry of goals, but isn’t convinced Brentford’s Ivan Toney is the answer.

“With what’s gone on positionally at Arsenal this season, how the attacking players have moved around and how they’ve played with false nines with Kai Havertz or Leandro Trossard down the middle, Mikel Arteta will definitely be looking for a new striker in the summer,” Dixon said.

“Ivan Toney is a name that’s hot on everyone’s lips at the moment since he’s returned from his ban at Brentford, but would he fit in at Arsenal? I’m still trying to work that one out myself! When I see him playing for Brentford, there’s lots of good things about him, but the way he plays, Brentford play a very different style to Arsenal… Would he fit into that position at Arsenal? I’m not so sure he would.

“Arsenal do need to strengthen in that position, they have to keep getting better and stronger, as if the goals dry up elsewhere then they need somebody that can guarantee goals. I think they will bring someone in in that department this summer, but I’m just not sure Ivan Toney is the answer.

“Arsenal will have been preparing for who they might sign this summer for some time, since last summer, as that’s how clubs like Arsenal prepare, so I’m sure the club have plans in place.”
