Romeo Lavia has sent an emotional message to Chelsea fans after being ruled out for the rest of the season following yet another massive injury setback. The 20-year-old has only made one appearance for the club since arriving from Southampton for £58million in the summer.

“Hi Chelsea family. As you may know and despite my countless efforts, I will be missing the remainder of the season,” he wrote on Instagram. “This has been a frustrating season for me, not being able to help my teammates.

“I love this squad, this badge and being on the pitch more than anything. Trust that I have given my all everyday to get back. Thank you for the love, support and critics because they all affect me positively and keep me going.

“Can’t wait to give it back and share many special moments together [blue heart emoji] See you soon.”

Chelsea confirmed that Lavia would be limited to just half-an-hour on the pitch this season in a statement released on Wednesday. “Midfielder Romeo Lavia is to unfortunately miss the remainder of our 2023-24 campaign following a setback in his recovery,” it reads.

“Recent medical assessments have confirmed that Lavia, who sustained a significant thigh injury against Crystal Palace back in December, will not feature again this season.”

His only game time so far came in a late 2-1 win against Crystal Palace on December 27. He came on as a substitute but was ruled out shortly after by Mauricio Pochettino, who expressed his immediate concern for the Belgian.

Lavia played more minutes than any other teenager last season, his only one with Saints, before being snapped up by the Blues. Liverpool were one of many sides keen to sign the former Manchester City academy ace but with connections to Eden Hazard and Joe Shields, Chelsea eventually came out on top.
